As outdoor enthusiasts, we spend an insane amount of time researching the best equipment. If you’re anything like me, you try not to think about all the time you’ve spent reading about gear and how much money you’ve spent on rods, reels, guns, sonar, lures, decoys, boats…the list goes on and on. Please just don’t tell my wife.
Now think about how much time you’ve spent looking into solutions for your number one asset, your vision. Probably none… why is this? I believe the industry lacks the knowledge required to make a commitment to you, the outdoor enthusiast, and your vision. At RLVNT, we promise to change that.
What you might wear: Glass
Your “premium” pair of sunglasses probably has lenses made of glass. Glass lenses are great, and they work, but they have a ton of limitations. Glass is very heavy, it’s not impact resistant, and it’s super expensive. It has a limited range of available prescriptions and tints. So why use it? Its only real strength is its clarity. With an abbe value (optical clarity rating) of 59, it’s pretty darn clear. Here’s the deal, though, your eyes have an abbe value of about 45, so I’d argue glass won’t make your vision any clearer.
What you probably wear: Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is the most common lens material used for sunglasses. Polycarbonate is a popular choice in outdoor eyewear because it’s very light and has decent impact resistant. That’s great, but it has a terrible abbe value – only 30. Fail! Since it performs so poorly in the visual acuity category it shouldn’t be used by serious outdoor enthusiasts who need the best vision possible.
What you should be wearing: Trivex
If you’re serious about the time you spend outdoors and you want glasses that put you in the best position to succeed in the field, you need Trivex lenses. It’s the best lens material for outdoor use, bar none. It was originally developed in 2002 by PPG for the military to use in helicopter windshields and fighter jet canopies. Trivex is the best of all worlds – impact resistant, super light, easily RX-able and tintable, and with a 45 abbe value it won’t reduce the clarity of your vision. That’s why we at RLVNT choose Trivex lenses for our eyewear solutions. You should too.
